Neck contractures: causes, symptoms and relief in Palma

Neck contracture is one of the most common issues we see. People arrive with a stiff neck, unable to turn their head, with pain that sometimes goes down to the shoulder or up to the head. And almost always the same story: "I don't know what I did".

What is a neck contracture? It is an involuntary, sustained contraction of the neck and trapezius muscles. The muscle stays locked in tension and won't relax. It can range from mild discomfort to pain that prevents you from moving your neck.

What causes it? The most common causes we see: - Long hours at the computer with poor posture - Sleeping in an awkward position - Accumulated stress stored in the shoulders and neck - Sudden movements or overexertion - Cold in the area (air conditioning, drafts)

How long does it last? Without treatment, an acute contracture can last 3 to 7 days. With professional treatment, improvement is usually noticeable after the first session. Chronic contractures — recurring every few weeks — typically need 3 to 5 sessions to resolve fully.

How is it relieved? For mild contractures, local heat and gentle stretching can help. But when the muscle is truly locked, the best solution is a decontracting massage by professional hands. Not just any massage — it needs specific work on the contracture point with the right pressure and knowledge of the anatomy.

Does decontracting massage hurt? It can be slightly uncomfortable when working on the contracture point, but never unbearable. Most of our clients describe it as "hurts in a good way" — that sensation that tells you something is releasing. We always work within your comfort level.

When to come in? If you have had neck discomfort for more than three days and heat or stretching has not helped, come see us. The first consultation is free and we will tell you if decontracting massage is what you need.
